BodySong Retreats

A mindful collaboration

During the pandemic, I started attending Beccy Owen’s "Couch Choir” - an online group singing session. I could not believe how quickly I felt part of this community (it did not feel virtual), and absolutely delighted in the way Beccy held space. I could immediately sense we were aligned in our values around inclusivity and social justice, and from that first session (yes, I am that quick to judge), decided I would like to run retreats with Beccy.

It took a little longer to get together and start planning, but by September 2023 we had a plan and a name.

Our collaboration exists because we both feel these practices should be available to all. No experience or skill is necessary in either yoga or singing to participate in BodySong; we want to move beyond the fictional hierarchy of “skill” that can exist around each.

Two comments from participants reflect that we seem to be succeeding in this area:

“I am no longer scared of yoga!”, and “ I was really nervous about singing in a group, but the experience was wonderful!”

Beccy and I delight in the restorative power of these practices (especially when combined) and believe in providing access to these opportunities for all. We offer flexible participation options so that you can take care of your energy and wellbeing, allowing yourself extra breaks or time away when you need it.

We offer three tiers for pricing with no questions asked, and will always consider alternative models of exchange if finances are a barrier. (For more information on the pricing system - pop to my schedule page, where I have laid this out in a little more detail).

A gift to your nervous system

We are interested to witness and experience quite how amazing people seem to feel after a BodySong retreat; genuinely - it exceeds our high expectations. Here are some of the things we think are at play:

  • somatic release through movement

  • long exhalations stimulating parasympathetic nervous system

  • vibration made through sound - stimulating vagus nerve

  • meditation, breath-work, relaxation (benefits well documented!)

  • the sheer joy of singing and moving together leads to…

  • a “safe and connected” community (polyvagal theory)

A safe and connected community

It is worth us saying a little more about this. Beccy and I are deeply committed to creating inclusive spaces and to protecting the safety of all who attend.

The BodySong community is trans-inclusive, LGBTQ+ affirming, anti-racist, pro-disability-justice, neurodiversity-affirming, body-affirming, class-conscious, age-inclusive, sexuality-inclusive, faith-inclusive and secular-inclusive, and committed to the dignity of every person within and outwith our spaces.

We ask that you only attend if you are able to support us in holding this space for everyone.

“My mum is your mum!”

The catering and logistical support of Marjorie Keys makes these retreats. You will be well-nourished, with all dietary needs taken into account, rest assured. Whether it’s home-made cakes, delicious salads, or carefully considered pot-luck meals, my mum will consider each and every one of you in her planning. GF and vegan options always available.

And with carefully chosen venues and lovingly crafted schedules, each retreat is designed with you in mind.
